Self-Assessment Essay

Writing for the Sciences 21003 course had countless writing assignments that became exceptional guidance and instrument to the enhancement of my thought process, analyzation, and writing capabilities.

The scientific controversy paper helped me introduce a current controversial issue and conceptualize a stance I support. The arguments presented were articulated in the format of agreement and opposition point of views. By doing so, I informed my audience about the matter and gravity of the situation as well as prompt them to choose a standpoint within their own terms. Then again, a part of me believe that by indicating a clear conclusion i.e., taking one of the two sides, I would have made my closing statement more impactful. Furthermore, by changing some sentence structures and their placement on the paragraph, it would have produced a more coherent flow of thoughts and ending. In the meantime, analyzing my chosen sources in terms of their methodologies and conclusions prepared me to more in-depth writing assignments such as the research paper.

Our research paper placed emphasis on the importance of outlines, drafts, revisions, and collaboration. Through engaging with my group member (Nathanael Singh) via zoom meetings, we were able to stretch and strengthen our writing techniques. In a way that we created a thorough outline for our topic, drafted different sections of an IMRAD paper, then proceeded to continuously revise and edit our grammars, sentence formations, synergy between our narrative and data as well as the paper’s overall cohesiveness. Though we sometimes had linguistic and perception differences in presenting our ideas or arguments, we made sure to effectively communicate our opinions and come to consensus concerning our paper. Thus, we learnt a lot from our variances. By the same token, we also became efficient in synthesizing our sources’ methods, results, and discussion as well as cite them correctly.

Document 03 pertains to the sources we may or may not have used on our research paper. Through finding the right primary and secondary sources, I efficiently practiced skimming and gathering crucial parts that support our research inquiry. In like manner, my group engaged with diverse sources such as comments, blogs, IMRAD papers, health and news articles, and so on. Similarly, traversing through the library sources allowed us to apply the learnings we acquired from our library session as we directly selected databases that had connection to only medicine and/or sciences field. By which we were able to find a wide-range of peer-reviewed articles. Also, we made use of Google Scholar to find outside sources that may be linked to our inquest. In hopes of making things easier for our group, I summarized and compiled important points under each source and we further categorized which of them was useful and a priority. The highlighted parts are the ones we mostly incorporated into our research paper.

Document 01 entails how notes inspire a well written response to a question. By annotating my reading assignments, I was able to have a better understanding of the course materials as well as efficiently form a main response and engage with my peer’s thoughts. Not to mention, I especially used quotations from Atwood’s poetic piece as well as outside sources to denote the influence of money on all levels of society.

Document 02 concerns how an outline greatly develops a writer’s course of action. Through my outline, I was able to create a basis and expand my view about the pandemic. Though its format is in question form, I was still able to formulate the notion that governments play crucial roles in mitigating COVID-19 by asking the right questions directly.

In essence, writing is a lifelong process whereby individuals have to continuously expose themselves to diverse written pieces in order to learn and apply their understandings into their own writings. In taking Writing for the Sciences 21003 this semester, I became capable of discerning which sources amplify my arguments as well as composing written works worth its time and effort.
